The Kite Runner written by Khaled Hosseini shows the development of the character Amir over events that happen in the novel. The events that affect him are the kite tournament, his return to Afghanistan and the final park scene. These events teach us how Amir seeks redemption through doing good but for a selfish purposes.

In the novel the kite tournament is an event that happens every year in Afghanistan Amir and Hassan compete together in the tournament. Amir is thrown challenges in this tournament and seems to over come them with the help of Hassan, after cutting the final string on an opponents kite Amir is victorious. Hassan is Amirs runner for catching the last kite Hassan manages to get the kite but he is chased by some bullies. Amir realizes Hassan has not come back and goes on a trip to find him he finds him in an ally way surrounded by bullies. Hassan has the option of giving up the kite or to keep it and something bad happen, Hassan decides not to give up the kite as he knows this is a big event to Amir and has to suffer for his decision. Amir seems to watch on as Hassan suffers and does nothing to help him and this is where Amirs life of guilt starts. This event is crustal to the character of Amir as after all the years of wanting his fathers approval he finally gets it but it is not what he expected as he finds out that he is nothing like his father and the sacrifice he made was not worth a moment of his father attention.  This is shown in the lines “Baba held me close to him, rocking me back and forth. In his arms, I forgot what I’d done. And that was good.” and “Nothing was free in this world. Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay to win Baba. “ in this event we learn that Amir is a coward he because he cannot stand up for his friend even thought he made a sacrifice for Amir, Amir stands there and then runs as he is to self centered to suffer himself to save Hassan.
